A long expanse of land spreads far and wide, stretching miles and miles across the Atacama desert. Suddenly, in the middle of the landscape, a bold hand protrudes out from below, breaking the endless space. The Hand of the Desert, created by Mario Irarrázabal, is a giant sculpture that stands 11 metres tall. It is made out of iron and cement and is located deep within Northern Chile.
Hand of the Desert has a profound effect on anyone standing near it. According to the artist, the hand evokes various human emotions such as sorrow and loneliness. Many have found it to look like a giant man who is trapped in the desert. Whatever the intent, the sculpture is a fascinating sight and has become a very popular Chile attraction.
