If you used to watch Flintstones when you were a kid, this place should remind you of Bedrock. For the benefit of those who haven’t heard of Bedrock, it’s the fictional prehistoric city where the Flintstones characters live.

At a glance you would think that these are common rock formations, but if you look close enough, you would discover that there’s more to this place than what meets your eyes. Located among the “fair chimney” rock formations is the town of Goreme, part of the historical region of Cappadocia, Turkey.

What make this town interesting are the churches, homes and pigeon houses that were carved directly into the rock formations. One of the best examples of richly decorated churches in Goreme is Tokali Kilise, the largest church that features 9th century frescoes. With its spectacular landscape and significant contribution to history and human civilisation, Goreme deserves to be considered one of the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
