Standing like a castle where a damsel in distress is waiting for her prince, this majestic structure is not even close to a fairy tale castle you may have imagined. It’s also not found in UK or Europe where many ancient structures were built. This place beautifully lies in the Latin American country of Colombia.

Dubbed as one of the world’s most outstanding architectural monuments, Las Lajas Sanctuary is a Roman Catholic basilica built inside the canyon where the Guitara river flows. This stunning piece of architectural wonder rises 100 metres high from the bottom of the canyon and is connected to the other side of the gorge by a 50-metre tall bridge.

The church’s creation was inspired by the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Amerindian Maria Mueces and her deaf-mute daughter Rosa in 1754. Since then, it became a sacred pilgrimage site that miraculously heals the sick.
Miraculous or not, Las Lajas Sanctuary is a truly inspiring place that you should not miss in Colombia.
If you’re visiting South America, add this church in your list of must-go attractions.
