While Japan and China are celebrating their cold snow festivals this February, Dominican Republic is preparing for its warmest, oldest and most popular festival – the La Vega Carnival. Dating back to the time when the first European settlers arrived in the 16th century, La Vega Carnival is considered an important cultural event of the country.
Colourful masks and wild costumes, usually demonstrating the main carnival character diablo cojuelo (pictured above), parade the streets on the last Sunday of February or the first Sunday of March. The carnival started as a religious activity in preparation for the Lent season and its concept revolved around the victory of good over evil. In recent years, however, the carnival has incorporated the Independence Day celebration which falls every February 27.
