The reason why the residents painted their buildings with blue still remains a mystery. Some say it may have been the Brahmins, members of the highest Hindu caste, who wanted to indicate their social status. Others say it is a way to prevent termites and other insects from destroying the structures. Not knowing the cause of such phenomenon still does not stop people from admiring this impenetrable Indian city.
