The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, also known as the Pearl Bridge, still holds the record for the world’s longest suspension bridge since its completion in 1998. The bridge links Kobe and Awaji Island in Japan with a central span of 1,991 metres.

The construction of the bridge was documented and shown in one episode of the National Geographic’s Megastructures. This was one of Japan’s greatest engineering attempts to defy the laws of nature. The bridge was designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions like earthquakes measuring up to magnitude 8.5.

Aside from its functionality of connecting two places, the bridge also gives an exciting educational tour. Bridge World offers an excursion allowing tourists to walk inside the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge and enjoy the breathtaking view atop the bridge tower at 300m above the sea.
