Long ago, in 1580, Sir William of Orange gave the command to construct a star fort on the sand ridge of the Bourtanger moor, the border of modern Germany. The fortress was of grave importance during the years 1593 to 1851 as it placed the only road between Germany and the Spanish-controlled city of Groningen under William’s control. Dismantled in 1851, the fortress allowed a beautiful agrarian village to come to being. However in the 1960s, the county of Vlagtwedde reconstructed the fortress to become what it is at present day.
Today, take yourself centuries back in time for the Bourtange fort has been recreated to show the 1700s. Walk through the star-like wonder and be amazed by the bold ramparts, deep ditches and soldiers’ barracks, all created in perfect detail to depict the past!
