Hong Kong Introduces New Passenger Security Charge Increase to Departing Travellers

Time to revisit your travel budget.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is about to get a little more expensive for departing passengers. Just recently, the airport authority has announced an increase in the Passenger Security Charge (PSC) to fund the establishment’s security upgrades and smart screening systems.

The new Passenger Security Charge fees

Starting 1 January 2025, travellers departing Hong Kong will now face a HK$65 (S$11.25) PSC, a HK$10 (S$1.73) increase from the current fee. This marks the first adjustment to the passenger security charge since 2021.

Apart from this, the airport authority also hints at further price hikes. Airlines will now be required to collect HK$75 (S$12.98) from passengers in a phased approach starting 2027. The exact timeline should depend on passenger traffic growth over time.

The reason behind the increase

HKIA is investing in advanced security measures to ensure passenger safety and a smoother travel experience. This means enhanced security screening systems and additional security personnel, hence the increase in passenger security charge.

This new passenger security charge will likely be collected as part of your airline ticket or airport departure tax. Always check with your airline or travel agent for any additional fees associated with your flight to avoid travel mishaps and delays.

While the price hike in passenger security charge may cause a dent to your trip, Hong Kong remains a popular travel destination. Here are some tips to consider when planning your trip:

  • Factor in the new fees: Budget for the increase in departure tax when planning your overall travel expenses.
  • Book your flight in advance: Usually, air fares tend to be cheaper the earlier you book.
  • Consider alternative airports: If departing from Hong Kong isn’t essential, explore flights from neighbouring airports like Shenzhen or Macau.
  • Look for deals and discounts: Many airlines and travel agents offer promotions and discounts throughout the year. Be on the lookout for those!
