For many people, New Year’s Eve in Singapore is all about the beautiful fireworks displays. We all look forward to colourful sparks of light parading across the Marina Bay sky welcoming the New Year! But this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Singapore will be a bit different, all in the name of COVID-19 safety.
In a move to avoid crowding, there will be no fireworks display at Marina Bay on New Year’s Eve. This is to account for social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.
Fireworks display at various heartland locations around Singapore
That doesn’t mean we won’t get to see the much-awaited display of fireworks, though! To account for public safety, the Marina Bay Singapore countdown for 2021 will take a different route.
The fireworks will instead be set off at 11 different heartland locations across Singapore. The 11 locations are Bedok, Bishan, Boon Lay, Geylang, Hougang, Jurong, Nanyang, Tampines, Tiong Bahru, Woodlands, and Yew Tee.
The best part about this is definitely being able to catch the fireworks from your own balcony (if they are set off around your area)! The format could be similar to that of National Day earlier this year.

The fireworks display will also be broadcasted on television for everyone to see. Other special events such as the New Year’s Eve music programme will also be held. It will feature international and local artists from music, fashion, and dance.
People’s Association (PA) announced that year-end countdown programmes will be going virtual for the first time this year. Click here for additional information on the 16 virtual programmes taking place at the various constituencies.
Light and projections displays at Marina Bay
In addition to the fireworks display across various locations, there will also be other celebrations for Singaporeans to enjoy. The Marina Bay skyline will light up with extravagant light and projection displays. The month-long display starting Dec 2020 will feature a light show called “Shine a Light” and a projection show called “Share a Moment”.
Shine a Light will take place from 1 Dec to 31 Dec 2020. Light rays will be projected from The Promontory and will light up the Marina Bay skyline. These lights aim to symbolise unity, positivity, and resilience amid the pandemic.
Share a moment will take place nightly from 25 Dec to 31 Dec 2020. The exteriors of three iconic landmarks on the Marina Bay — The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, artScience Museum, and the Merlion — will display projection mappings. The projections will feature vibrant artworks made by students. Additional details of the light displays will be revealed at a later date.
With many more light and firework displays to look forward to, welcoming the New Year is certainly going to be more exciting! For more details on the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2021, visit their website. Let’s hope you get to see these light spectacles from your neighbourhood!
