What is the key message of the COVID-19 video featuring Phua Chu Kang?

The couple engages in a back-and-forth ‘conversation’ while debunking common myths and shedding light about COVID-19 vaccines. While the topic at hand is something serious, it is done in a light-hearted manner that is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers.

For instance, Rosie questions the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. Phua Chu Kang responds with “The vaccine is not anyhow whack”.

In another scene, he stands his ground that “it’s safe for most, including elderly because the government got check properly”.

The extensive usage of Singlish phrases — made famous by the sitcom character himself — certainly helps to allay the lingering fears. For the uninitiated, it is an informal form of English widely used in Singapore. That’s a recurring theme of all the public service announcement videos starring the ‘ah beng’.

In case you have forgotten, the nostalgic SAR-vivor rap by the comedian in 2003 also has English phrases infused with other words from various languages.

Expect nothing short of flashy dance moves, rap-battles, catchy tunes, and backstage dancers in this COVID-19 video.

The catchy video is making waves

The video released by Gov.sg has garnered more than two million views on YouTube and Twitter. It has even gone on to make headlines in various publications around the world including The New York Times and The Guardian

Now that Singapore is facing a sudden rise in community cases, the COVID-19 PSA video with Phua Chu Kang in it is a timely reminder for all. Like Uncle Phua said, “Singapore, don’t wait and see. Better get your shot, steady pom pi pi.”
