Formed millions of years ago, the Rock of Guatape, is a distinctively massive stone that seems omnipresent anywhere you are in the city of Medellin, Columbia. It was believed that the Tahamies Indians, former inhabitants of the region, worshiped the rock.

Sitting astride the borders of Guatapé and El Peñol, the rock had a long history of ownership disputes. To settle the matter, the residents of Guatapé decided to paint the town’s name on the rock in huge white letters. The residents of El Peñol formed a huge mob to stop it so only the “G” and part of the “U” were completed.

The natural look of the rock may have been distorted by the white “GI” paint, but this doesn’t discourage tourists from climbing up the top where a stunning panorama awaits.
