With the overwhelming number of holy crosses in this place, vampires and other wicked beings – if they ever exist – will certainly retreat. If you’re too sinful, you may also get burned here. All joking aside, this so called Hill of Crosses in Lithuania is a Catholic pilgrimage site that was declared a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
The exact origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill still remains a mystery but it was believed that the first crosses were placed around the chapel on the top of the hill after the November Uprising failed in 1831. The families of the fallen insurgents could not organize proper funerals so they placed crosses on the hill instead.

Over the centuries, big crucifixes, statues of the Virgin Mary and many religious and patriotic statues have been left here by Catholic pilgrims. The exact number of crosses is uncertain but it is estimated that there are already more than 100,000. Regardless of religion and spiritual orientation, this place is definitely worth a visit.
