Seated in Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, Hong Kong, the Big Buddha, also known as the Tian Tan Buddha, is a giant bronze Buddha statue flocked by tourists from all over the world. It is near Po Lin Monastery and Lantau Peak, two other famous tourist attractions in Hong Kong.

Buddha is a popular icon symbolizing the “awakened or enlightened being”  in Buddhism. There are several other Buddha statues found in different countries but what’s interesting about the Big Buddha in Hong Kong is that it faces north, opposing the other great Buddha statues which normally face south. In order to reach this iconic structure, visitors have to climb 268 steps but the site also offers a trail for the handicapped. The Big Buddha is open to public from 10:00 AM to 5:45 PM and can be reached by bus, taxi, ferry or train.
