TripZillaSquid Game became so popular to viewers of all ages that kids from South Korea actually ended up calling the phone number that was featured on the K-drama’s notorious calling card. There was more than one, so coincidentally, one of the numbers actually belonged to a random citizen.

These cards contain an eight-digit phone number that inevitably connects the Squid Game players to the survival game. But in the real world, the phone numbers simply connect Koreans to a fellow local who might not have even been aware of Squid Game. Such was the case of the man living in Gyeonggi Province. In an interview with the broadcaster MBC, the unnamed man said he was getting more than 4,000 calls a day from children who also “wanted to be in the game,” seemingly unaware that the survival game was not real.
Due to this, a South Korean presidential candidate, Huh Kyung-young, offered to pay the man millions of won for his troubles. “I heard that the owner of the phone number shown on a business card in Squid Game is suffering serious damage from prank calls. I would like to buy the number for 100 million won,” he said on his Facebook page.
The owner of the Squid Game phone number also added that he initially thought they were prank calls until he was informed that his number was the same one in the Netflix series. It’s a huge inconvenience on his part as he receives calls, texts, and pictures even through the night. He can’t easily change his phone number either since he has operated his business with it for 10 years.
According to a Korean daily newspaper Hankook Ilbo, the drama production company Siren Pictures has begun negotiating with the phone number owner to resolve the issue.
