My Favourite Greek Island Paradise – Folegandros

Visiting the Greek island paradise of Folegandros is finally a dream come true!

It had always been a dream of mine to visit Greece, especially Santorini Island – discovering Folegandros was a pleasant surprise when I finally made my dream come true. I had had a particularly stressful year and decided to take some time off and booked passage – life is just too darn short to put things off, especially my Greek vacation.

About Folegandros

Folegandros, a small jewel of an Island, is located in the breathtaking Aegean Sea. Folegandros is an island in the Cyclades, a Greek Island group and is one of Europeís best kept secrets. Only a 45 minute ferry boat ride from legendary Santorini, I was surprised by how different both locations were. I will say that I fell in love with all of the Aegean islands that I had the opportunity to explore, including Santorini, but Folegandros has earned a special place in my heart.

Folegandros is a small and peaceful island, home to only three modest villages and less than 700 people. This is just one of the reasons I fell in love with the place. I rented a room (although there are other options) and set off from there to explore the countless caves and cliffs of Folegandros, walked the charming streets, stopping along the way to enjoy some of the freshest seafood I’ve ever eaten. I also set out from the port of Folegandros to checkout out the other areas nestled in the Aegean Sea. One of my favourite spots was Katergo beach which you can only get to by boat, making it one of the most tranquil secluded beaches I found during my stay.

I did a lot of exploring on the island on foot, the best way to enjoy it. During my adventures I came across ancient streets paved with age old marble blocks and stone walls here and there along the hillsides. I literally felt like I had stepped back in time, an awesome feeling.

Hora, Folegandros’s Beautiful Capital

Hora is nestled against an awe inspiring cliff that reaches 820 feet above sea level. The beautiful village was built out of the medieval castle of Kastro and the rest of the area is brimming with romantic looking homes with impressive staircases with huge balconies that look out over the village. Hora reminded me of the movie blockbuster “Mamma Mia!” and it will always be one of my favourite destinations.

Oh, and the Food!

For as small as the island it, I was totally surprised by the amazing restaurants and the enchanting atmosphere each offers. What’s not to love about enjoying Greek food from tables placed outside, where you can enjoy your meals and people watch along cobbled streets?

The secluded beaches, the spectacular views, the beaches, the people and the food made for the perfect, Greek holiday, all presented in the middle of the legendary Aegean Sea. Do yourself a favour and if you plan on visiting Greece, leave yourself at least a few extra days to explore the Cyclades Island group, especially Folegandros.
