The first year of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about many challenges but plenty of realisations too. The first of which was that to work remotely or from home would be the new normal for many businesses moving forward, even after the pandemic. That means people would have more time to themselves; and if their profession allowed it, they would be able to travel the world more freely.

The factors considered in the study
The researchers began the study by selecting 75 major cities in the world, which are often reputed to be the world’s most liveable destinations. From there, they studied each location according to three categories: cost and infrastructure, legislation and freedom, and liveability.
Cost and infrastructure covered the availability of adequate spaces, Internet capacity, and minimal extra expense. Legislation and freedom weighed in the security of human rights, special visas, tax deductions, and regulations for digital nomads. Meanwhile, liveability took into account weather conditions, acoustic and light pollution, and access to cultural and leisure events.
The 20 best cities for digital nomads all scored above 75 over a total of 100 points, with New York scoring the lowest at 79.17 and Melbourne scoring the highest at 100. The top four cities for digital nomads notably offer digital nomad visas while other destinations have yet to make the option available for remote workers.
