Underwater Museum, Calcun, Mexico

Visiting a museum is interesting but going to an underwater museum is a totally different experience. Submerged under the waters of Isla de Mujeres and Cancún, Mexico, the Underwater Museum is a large collection of 500 life-sized statues created to protect the reefs of Cancun National Marine Park. These sculptures resemble members of the local community and over time they will form an artificial reef for the marine life to thrive.

The project began when two people, Dr. Jaime González Cano and British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, shared a vision of building the world’s best and largest Underwater Museum. After Five years of MUSA foundation, six artists have their work placed at the bottom of the ocean.

Divers, snorkelers and underwater enthusiasts alike may plunge into the hidden treasures beneath with a variety of diving and snorkelling tours available in the island.
