In the small city of Torrevieja, Spain, lie two large pink salt water lakes called Salinas de Torrevieja (meaning the “Salt Pans” of Torrevieja). These gorgeous lakes got their bright pink colour due to a particular type of algae that produces a chemical substance when sunlight falls onto it. These salt lakes are in fact crucial to the ecosystem and are protected as a natural park. Due to the lakes, the surrounding marshlands have a high concentration of sodium and magnesium salts.

The lakes are an amazing spot for flat walking. The wind might blow you away, but it just adds to the uplifting atmosphere at the site. There are also plenty of birdlife to keep you occupied. Migratory birds are the main inhabitants of the lake. According to many people, the best time to see this lovely sight is when the sun is just rising. The multitude of colours and hues will blow you away as an intoxicating meld of orange, pink and gold overwhelms you. All these colours will be shimmering onto the water, a spectacular light show you cannot miss! If you are within the area, this is definitely a place you should visit.

There are a variety of things you can do by the lake. Renting bikes and cycling all about is very popular with many visitors. Some even come with a basket of food. They set up a picnic and munch on surrounded by lovely scenery. The city of Torrevieja (meaning old=vieja ; tower-torre) is also a great place to explore. It first became renowned in 1802 by taking the salt administration from Origuela. Tourism and fishing are also a large part of the city’s economy. There are more than 1300 boats altogether at the harbour! A lovely flourishing city, I recommend this for your next trip.
