Who says all cemeteries are creepy? There’s always an exception to the rule. As the name suggests, the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta, Romania is the total opposite to your usual image of a cemetery. It doesn’t have the gloomy atmosphere and dreary grave markers. Instead, it has colourful tombstones that depict scenes from the lives of the deceased.

First started by local artist Stan Ioan Pătraş in 1935, Merry Cemetery was anchored on the belief that the soul is immortal and that death should be celebrated to anticipate a better life. Today, this unusual cemetery is considered an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction in Romania.
Head down to Romania to see this colourful cemetery before it’s gone.
