To all chocoholics, here’s an excuse for you to celebrate early Christmas in Geneva, Switzerland. Every December 11-12, a festival in Geneva called L’Escalade celebrates the defeat of the Savoyard soldiers who attacked Geneva in 1602.

During the battle, the people fought back and defended their land, but one notable act of bravery was from Mère Royaume, a cook who poured her pot of hot soup over the head of a Savoyard soldier. To commemorate this, the people eat marzipan-filled marmites or pots of chocolate during the festival.

L’Escalade is not only an opportunity for merrymaking. It’s also an interesting way to get into the history and culture of Geneva. So if you’re planning a holiday in Geneva, Switzerland, you may want to plot it during the festival.
