There are so many naturally built holes on our planet but this one’s greatly unmatched. Found in the city of Kimberley, South Africa, the Big Hole, also known as the Open Mine or Kimberley Mine, is an open-pit and underground diamond mine considered to be the largest hand-dug excavation on earth. It has a massive crater filled with water approximately 214 metres deep.

When the diamond mining activity stopped, The Big Hole became such a huge attraction. The different mining companies decided to turn the site into one big company known as De Beers, which is responsible for the maintenance and registration of the Big Hole as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though there’s an entrance fee, the interesting museum and the breathtaking scenery from the viewing deck will be all worth it.
