City Breaks

If you love the energy of Chinese New Year but want a change of scenery, these cities offer incredible food, shopping, and vibrant celebrations.

1. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Just a one-hour flight away, KL goes all out for CNY. Major malls such as Pavilion KL boast stunning decorations, while Petaling Street (Chinatown) and the magnificent Thean Hou Temple are hubs of cultural activity.

Be prepared if you’re driving: the usual four-hour journey can easily become a five to seven-hour crawl during the CNY exodus due to heavy traffic.

2. Penang, Malaysia

A foodie’s paradise, Penang is a fantastic choice for a cultural CNY experience. A 1.5-hour flight is the best way to get there. Immerse yourself in the festivities around Georgetown’s historic clan houses (kongsi) by watching lively lion dances in the streets. Beyond the festivities, explore the city’s famous street art and, of course, feast on char kuey teow and laksa.

For those driving from Singapore: be warned, the journey can take 8-10 hours or more during the festive season.

3. Malacca, Malaysia

This UNESCO World Heritage city offers a charming, historical backdrop for the festivities. Jonker Street glows with red lanterns and hosts bustling night markets. It’s a more laid-back city break, perfect for soaking in heritage and Peranakan culture. Time your visit for the Chingay parade or witness traditional celebrations at the historic Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest of its kind in Malaysia.

For Adventures in Nature

Escape the city’s hustle and bustle entirely without a long flight. These destinations are perfect for recharging on a beach, exploring nature, or simply doing nothing at all.

4. Sabah, Malaysia

A 2.5-hour flight to Kota Kinabalu is your gateway to adventure. While Chinese New Year is celebrated on Gaya Street, the real draw is the great outdoors. Trek through Kinabalu Park, spot orangutans in Sepilok, or island-hop around Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The dry season in February makes for perfect weather.

5. Krabi, Thailand

Stretching slightly further at a two-hour flight, Krabi rewards with stunning limestone cliffs and turquoise seas. The timing coincides with sunny skies and calm waters ideal for island-hopping to Railay Beach or the Phi Phi Islands. For the more adventurous, world-class rock climbing routes await along Tonsai Beach.

For a Peaceful Retreat

If your ideal holiday involves switching off completely, these nearby island escapes offer maximum relaxation with minimal fuss.

6. Bintan, Indonesia

At just 50 minutes by ferry from Tanah Merah, Bintan is the definition of an easy getaway. Since Chinese New Year isn’t a major holiday here, resorts remain peaceful and well-priced. Spend your days at a beach club, indulge in a spa treatment, or enjoy a fresh seafood dinner at a traditional kelong.

7. Batam, Indonesia

Another quick Indonesian escape at 45 minutes by ferry, Batam is perfect for travellers seeking golf, seafood, and relaxation without the festive crowds. The island’s numerous golf courses offer excellent value, while waterfront restaurants serve fresh catches at reasonable prices.

For a Truly Unique Getaway

Looking for something completely different? This destination offers a tranquil, spiritual, and unforgettable experience.

8. Luang Prabang, Laos

Here’s an unexpected gem. This UNESCO-listed town is just 2.5 hours by flight and offers a refreshing change of pace. February brings perfect weather for exploring gilded temples and French colonial architecture. Witness the serene morning alms-giving ceremony, visit Kuang Si Falls’ turquoise pools, or explore the sacred Pak Ou Caves. The town’s slow pace and spiritual atmosphere, not to mention its excellent Laotian and French fusion cuisine, provide the ultimate reset.

Planning Tips

Book accommodations and transport as soon as you can as Chinese New Year remains peak travel season across the region. Turn to less cushy transport modes (such as coaches) to avoid crowds and save on festive surcharges. Consider travelling on the eve or after the second day when rates typically drop and crowds thin.

Whether you’re after culture, nature, or simple relaxation, your perfect CNY celebration could be just a short journey away.
