Catch 2025’s Final Supermoon: Cold Moon Arrives This December

Brrr.. cold moon!

If you love stargazing or enjoy witnessing rare celestial moments, mark your calendars. The Cold Moon, also the last supermoon of 2025, will light up Singapore’s skies on 4 December. It’s the grand finale in a trio of back-to-back supermoons that began with October’s Harvest Moon and November’s Beaver Moon.

If the skies behave (fingers crossed!), you’ll be able to spot the supermoon from anywhere across the island. But for an uninterrupted view, aim for open spaces such as Marina Barrage, East Coast Park or Henderson Waves.

Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or just someone who loves a good photo moment, you’ll want to step outside for this one.

What’s so special about the Cold Moon?

The Cold Moon will reach full illumination at 7.14am on 5 December. This is the exact moment when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly, making the lunar surface appear fully lit. Even though this peak happens in the morning, you’ll still catch the moon looking round and radiant throughout the night of 4 December, right until it sets the next day.

The name “Cold Moon” comes from the Mohawk people of North America, who associated this full moon with the onset of winter’s long nights. True to its name, this moon tends to linger longer above the horizon than most others, a little cosmic bonus, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanack.

Bonus: Three meteor showers to end 2025

The Cold Moon isn’t the only sky spectacle this year. December brings a trio of meteor showers, each offering something different for night-sky enthusiasts.

1. The Leonids: Mid-November treat

Active from 3 November to 2 December, the Leonids will peak on the night of 17 November into the early hours of 18 November. Under ideal dark-sky conditions, you might spot 10 to 15 meteors per hour.

With the moon only 9% illuminated that night, visibility will be especially good. No telescopes needed, just head somewhere quiet and open between midnight and dawn, and look towards the constellation Leo.

2. The Geminids: The big one

If you only have time for one meteor shower this year, make it the Geminids. They’re known as one of the most spectacular annual showers, and will peak between 13 and 15 December. Expect up to 120 meteors an hour if conditions are right. Even casual observers stand a good chance of catching a few bright streaks.

3. The Ursids: A subtle finale

Rounding off the year are the Ursids, peaking between 22 and 23 December. They’re more modest, offering around 10 meteors per hour, and here’s the catch: they originate from Ursa Minor, a constellation that isn’t visible from Singapore. So, spotting one here will be tricky, but not impossible if luck is on your side.
