Since 1977, the Centre Pompidou has stood in Paris’s Marais district as a revolutionary cultural landmark. Its “inside-out” design, with colourful exposed pipes and an industrial aesthetic, shocked and fascinated the city. More than just a museum, the Pompidou has been a hub for modern art, performance, cinema, and public engagement, making art accessible to everyone.

Why the renovation is needed

The renovation, costing €460 million (~S$700 million), addresses long-standing technical and safety issues. Key priorities include: asbestos removal, fire safety upgrades, climate control improvements, accessibility enhancements for disabled visitors

The work will also reduce energy consumption by up to 40%, making the museum more sustainable while modernising its infrastructure.

During the closure, the museum’s “Constellation” programme will bring the Pompidou’s collection to partner locations in France and abroad, including Shanghai, Amsterdam, and Pompidou-Metz. A new facility, Centre Pompidou Francilien, Fabrique de l’Art, is also set to open in Massy in 2026 to support conservation and display efforts.

When the Pompidou reopens in 2030, visitors can expect an experience that goes beyond simply viewing art. The building’s iconic exterior will remain, but the interiors will be completely reimagined. The renovated museum will feature interactive, family-friendly spaces designed to spark creativity and engagement for all ages.

Galleries, cinemas, performance areas, retail spaces, and the museum’s library will all be upgraded. A key feature of the redesign is “transversality,” allowing art, books, performances, and play areas to blend together. Improved facilities will ensure that every visitor can enjoy the museum safely and comfortably.

The renovation promises to transform the Pompidou into a socially interactive and modern cultural hub, while preserving the iconic spirit and artistic energy that have made it one of Paris’s most beloved landmarks.

For travellers over the next five years, the Pompidou’s temporary closure is an invitation to explore its global exhibitions and imagine the future of one of Paris’s most beloved cultural institutions.
