‘Wicked’ Movie to be Directed By Jon Chu, Director of Crazy Rich Asians

‘Wicked’ Movie to be Directed By Jon Chu, Director of Crazy Rich Asians!

It's time to try defying gravity.

Wicked the musical is popular for a lot of things, such as the iconic line, “No one mourns the wicked!” Well, we’ve heard news about the Wicked movie, and everyone is definitely not mourning. Jon M. Chu confirmed earlier this year that he will officially be directing the film adaptation of Wicked, and fans are living for it.

Chu, after all, has the box office hit Crazy Rich Asians under his belt. Aside from that, he’s already directed the much-anticipated film adaptation of the musical In The Heights

Chu’s love for Wicked & what we know about the movie

Chu himself is a huge fan of Wicked and couldn’t be happier to play a big part in bringing the beloved musical to the big screen.

“Most of my life I have felt out of place, weird, and different. I hid behind my camera because people liked to be filmed and I could disappear. But when I saw Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Wicked over 15 years ago, as it was being workshopped in San Francisco, I couldn’t unsee it,” he said on Twitter.

It definitely seems like Wicked fans can place their trust in Chu because he understands what a Wicked film adaptation would mean to Wicked’s big fanbase. In his own words, “So to think that I have been invited to bring this timeless story to the biggest screens all around the world for people to experience with their family, best friends, and total strangers of all walks of life, ages, shapes, and colours, it’s like I’ve been invited to Oz by the Wizard himself.”

According to Chu, they’re at the early stages of creating the Wicked movie. Playbuck also confirmed on 3 July 2021 that production will start later this year, as confirmed to them by Wicked’s lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The search for an Elphaba and Glinda has also begun. “So, who wants to be Elphaba and Glinda?” teased Chu. Everything else about the Wicked film adaptation is still being kept under wraps.
