People typically use escalators or lifts on malls, subways and buildings because taking the stairs is just too cumbersome. However, there are just some stairs that are extremely irresistible to ignore like the stairs on the islet of Gaztelugatxe off the coast of Biscay, in the Spanish Basque County.

The islet is connected to the mainland through a man-made bridge and visitors must traverse 237 steps to reach the monastery that lies majestically on top of the hill. Legend has it that visitors can make a wish by ringing the bell three times upon reaching the entrance.

People who have crossed the rocky stairs have felt like they were walking above the sea that’s why the place is commonly referred to as the ‘Stairs Above the Sea’. Aside from the breathtaking views and fresh sea breeze, the mystic feeling when walking through the narrow bridge is more than enough reason to visit the islet of Gaztelugatxe.
