Considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra” in Portugal, Quinta da Regaleira is not just any ordinary palace with lovely gardens and secret tunnels. While it has all those characteristics, it carries something more enigmatic than any palace could have.

This four-hectare estate designed and originally owned by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro is believed to hide symbols of alchemy, Masonry and Tarot mysticism. Apart from the intricate system of tunnels and secret paths, the mystifying wells, called initiation wells, make this property a must-visit attraction in Sintra, Portugal. These wells were not used as water sources but they served as ceremonial sites for Tarot initiation rites. With all the mysticism around, Quinta da Regaleira is definitely a place you’d have to check for yourself.

While you’re not there yet, you may explore the palace with this video.
