Built in 1938, Ellinikon International Airport, also spelled Hellenikon, served as Athen’s main airport serving up to 12 million passengers annually. The airport served its purpose for more than 60 years until it was closed in 2001 to make way for a new and modern airport before Athens hosted the 2004 Olympic Games.
