From Contemptuous Dumping Ground to Glamorous Glass Beach

From Contemptuous Dumping Ground to Glamorous Glass Beach

Glass Beach, California, USA

From afar, Glass Beach look like broken shards of wine bottles randomly strewn across the beach. On closer look, these are actually sea glasses created from years of dumping into an area near the coastline of Northern Fort Bragg, California.

Households of Fort Bragg used to throw their garbages, including glass, appliances and even vehicles to what is now known as the Glass Beach. They referred to it as “The Dumps”.

Now, this uniquely man-made beach is mostly frequented by tourists in the summer to (ironically) collect glass. Because of this and the constant grinding from the waves, the glass is slowly diminishing. Efforts are undergoing to replenish this awe-inspiring beach with discarded glass.
