Books readily come along with us anywhere with the advent of smartphones and tablets. Thanks to technology, our lives have been so much easier nowadays. Did you know that many people in the middle ages couldn’t even afford to buy their own books because they were way too expensive? To solve this problem, public libraries were created.

The chained library of Zutphen in the eastern part of Netherlands is one of the three remaining chained libraries in Europe that didn’t change its system for more than 500 years. With valuable collections being chained to their wooden desk, the public was given free access to books without the risk of theft.

The whole “chained book” idea may sound absurd but it worked well in preserving these huge ancient books. Today, people can get a good recollection of the medieval period inside the chained library of Zutphen.
