Malaysia aims to reopen to foreigners soon
Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who heads the council tasked to oversee Malaysia’s economic recovery, informed reporters that their tourism industry was recovering too slowly. Hence, they are pegging to reopen to foreigners early in 2022 to give the economy a major boost. This, of course, wouldn’t be possible without Malaysia’s swift vaccination rollout. The country has fully vaccinated more than 70% of its population as of writing.
“Taking into account the level of achievement of the country’s excellent vaccination program, today’s meeting has decided that the country’s border be opened to international visitors by 1 January 2022,” he said in an advisory.
Aside from this, the Special Committee on Pandemic Management will soon announce more countries that they hope to share special travel corridors with. Early this week, Malaysia and Singapore launched their own Vaccinated Travel Lane. The country is also eyeing to gradually introduce a travel corridor with Indonesia soon.
We’ll keep you posted about Malaysia’s VTLs and travel corridors, so stay tuned!
