Many travellers from Southeast Asia are probably familiar with the name Genting Highlands as it is a popular destination. Over the years, it has undergone many changes. Now, it offers more fun attractions, activities, and delicious food, making it more than just a place to go to for the cold and breezy weather.

As someone who lives just 45 minutes away from Genting and has just recently been to the place, here is a list of must-try restaurants in Genting that I think will certainly hearten your trip!

1. Gohtong Jaya Street

While travelling up to Genting Highlands, you will pass by the town of Gohtong Jaya, since it is located halfway up the mountains. The streets are filled with all sorts of authentic Malaysian food, from famous bak kut teh (pork ribs with broth) to local’s favourite mamak (a restaurant selling Tamil Muslim food). So, before arriving at Genting Highlands, get your tummy filled here first!

One thing you shouldn’t miss out on is the delicious Malaysian Chinese cuisine in Gohtong Jaya. Loong Kee, Chuan Kie, and Dai Guan Hill are among the famous restaurants here. I personally like the braised pork with taro and fried Japanese tofu at Chuan Kie!

2. The Laughing Fish by Harry Ramsden

Get a taste of authentic British flavours at The Laughing Fish by Harry Ramsden! Located at the highest level at the SkyAvenue mall, this British pub is so popular that it was one of the to-go restaurants on my bucket list during my trip to Genting. While Harry Ramsden is a fast food chain from the United Kingdom that specialises in fish and chips, its Genting branch serves more than just that.

They have dishes like burgers, sandwiches, and desserts, as well as an extensive list of alcoholic drinks. I tried the most notable haddock fish and chips and it did not disappoint! The outside of the haddock is crispy while the inside is tender and juicy. There are three sizes available: regular, large, and legendary, and the legendary one was large enough for two people.

Tip: I arrived around 8.30pm on a weekday and they already ran out of most drinks, so remember to go earlier if you want to try the signature lemonades and cocktails!

3. Burger & Lobster

This seafood restaurant in Genting could actually be the sole reason some people visit Genting Highlands. Burger & Lobster has a worldwide reputation for serving some of the best Atlantic lobster dishes, as well as beef burgers. I was fortunate enough to try it with less than an hour of queuing time. Yes, that’s right — people normally have to line up for awhile to try this restaurant, as it does not accept reservations!

As recommended by the waiter, I got the original steamed lobster that comes with salad and chips. I love seafood and this place’s steamed lobster was hands down the best lobster I’ve had in my life, so far. The fresh, scrumptious and aromatic goodness… promise me you would try it at least once if you are planning on going Genting Highlands!

4. Motorino Pizzeria

When talking about good Genting food, Motorino Pizzeria should definitely be on the list. This pizzeria is ranked one of the top five in the United States and is one of the best places to go to if you long for some New York-style pizzas.

I tried the classic pepperoni pizza and it tasted very different from those pizzas that we usually get from the usual pizza chain stores. If you are someone who likes simple and flavourful pizzas, go give this Genting Highlands restaurant a try!

5. Beauty In The Pot

As the name implies, Beauty In The Pot’s soup base comprises the essence of beauty and health, making it more than just an ordinary hotpot restaurant. Among all the restaurants in Genting, this restaurant is probably the “highest” as it is located on the rooftop of SkyAvenue.

Must-try items include the Beauty Collagen Broth & Spicy Nourishing Broth. Aside from that, Beauty In The Pot is known for its adorable, pinky interior design and decoration, as well as its service.

6. Ali, Muthu, & Ah Hock

If you are craving a nostalgic and genuine Malaysian culinary experience, then don’t forget to stop by Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets. True to its name, this restaurant serves authentic Malaysian flavours from the three primary ethnic groups in the country: Malay, Indian, and Chinese food.

Nothing beats dining with a gorgeous view from top with a cup of good teh tarik (pulled tea). Some of the best food here include nasi lemak, prawn noodles, char kuey teow (stir-fried rice noodles), roti bakar (toasted bread), and roti jala with chicken curry.

7. Tavern in the Sky

Tavern In The Sky is one of the very few restaurants in Genting that offers good food and scenic view. Located on the seventh floor of Grand Ion Delemen, it is truly “in the sky.”

Calling itself a rooftop Thai dining restaurant, Tavern In The Sky mainly serves Thai mookata steamboat and barbeque. Dining here at night is even better because you get to savour a hot meal with breezy air and breathtaking views. Nonetheless, if you are here for the a la carte items, I personally recommend the tasty grilled udang galah (giant freshwater prawn) and seafood fried rice!

8. Genting Garden Hotpot

Genting Garden Hotpot is another must-try Genting Highlands food spot if you are looking for a new and exceptional steamboat experience. Located at Highlands Hotel, it incorporates a spectacular view, relaxing atmosphere and cool mountain air.

What’s more amusing about this place is that you can literally pick your own fresh, organic vegetables from the greenhouse and eat it on the spot with your steamboat! Its meaty beef marrow bones broth, nyonya secret broth and lobster soup will also leave you wanting for more.

Address: Resorts World, Highlands Hotel, Level 2, 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang

9. ShuDaxia HotPot

Dining at ShuDaxia HotPot was probably one of the most unforgettable experiences for me. This Genting hotpot place has tiptop service and will literally make you feel like a daxia (warrior) dining in Chengdu, China. On my part, I liked its majestic ancient design and the delicious mushroom and collagen broths. Besides that, you can also adjust the level of spicyness and thickness of the soup.

They are very generous with the portion, and there are unlimited sauces, fruits, tea and ice cream available. During special occasions, there will be bian lian (ancient Chinese dramatic face-changing art) performance, and if you dine here, you get to wear traditional Chinese clothing and take pictures for free. I vividly remember the staff yelling, “Welcome warrior, please have a seat” and “Goodbye warrior, see you again” when I entered and left the place. Yes, I almost burst out laughing as it was too adorable!

10. FUHU Dining by Zouk

Visit FUHU Dining by Zouk if you are feeling a little bougie and yearning for some quirky Genting food. This vibe dining restaurant is conceptualized by the prominent night club Zouk, and specialises in contemporary Chinese cuisine.

FUHU’s signature dishes like Boston Lobster Noodle, Sticky Lamb Shank, Spicy Seafood with Crispy Lotus and Aromatic Crispy Duck are not to be missed. This dining place also has captivatingly vibrant visuals and atmosphere that are perfect for picture-taking, making it one of the finest restaurants in Genting Highlands.
