Dear Evan Hansen Opens in Singapore: A Heartfelt, Modern Masterpiece That Will Leave You in Tears

You won't want to miss this heartwarming tale!

We caught Dear Evan Hansen at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, and let’s just say, by the time the lights came up, not a single dry eye remained. What we witnessed was more than just a Broadway musical. it was a deeply moving story about loneliness, belonging, and the quiet battles so many of us fight behind our screens.

A story that feels deeply personal

All settled in with a great view of the stage and hearts full of anticipation. The atmosphere before the curtain call was electric.

The show follows Evan, a socially anxious teenager who accidentally becomes the centre of a viral misunderstanding. From the first awkward letter he writes to the last trembling song, we couldn’t help but see fragments of ourselves in him: the longing to connect, the fear of rejection, the wish to be noticed.

Brought to Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia, this production feels raw and real. It is funny in unexpected places, brutally honest in others, and painfully relatable for anyone who has ever felt invisible.

Leading the Singapore season is Ellis Kirk, who completely embodies the role of Evan Hansen. His performance had us holding our breath — fragile yet full of hope, awkward yet endearing. When he sang “Waving Through a Window,” the entire theatre fell silent. You could feel every ounce of his character’s isolation and yearning.

Meanwhile, Rebecca McKinnis shines as Heidi Hansen, Evan’s mother, bringing warmth and vulnerability that grounds the show. The supporting cast, consisting of Helen Anker, Zoë Athena, and Hal Fowler, adds beautiful depth, turning each family dynamic into something we could all recognise from real life.

A world built with music and light

The Tony Award-winning score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (of La La Land and The Greatest Showman fame) is breathtaking. Songs like “You Will Be Found” and “For Forever” hit you straight in the heart.

Visually, the production is stunning. Digital projections, glowing screens, and ambient lighting pull you into Evan’s world, a swirl of online posts, messages, and emotions. The blend of technology and stagecraft mirrors the very theme of the musical: how we seek connection in a world that often feels disconnected.

Why you should see it

The cast took their final bows to thunderous applause and a well-earned standing ovation. What a powerful way to end the night.

If Hamilton dazzled you with its rhythm and Les Misérables stirred you with its passion, Dear Evan Hansen will touch you with its honesty. It’s a story that speaks to our generation, one that scrolls endlessly but still aches to be seen.

Of course, we had to grab some Dear Evan Hansen merch to remember this special night. Here’s a shot of the prices – you’re welcome!

We left the theatre emotionally spent yet strangely uplifted, the kind of catharsis that only great theatre can give.

Don’t forget to add your own note at the message wall before you leave – a perfect reflection of the musical’s spirit.

So grab your friends, or even go alone, and let yourself be found. You won’t regret it!

Dear Evan Hansen is now showing at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands to 16 November 2025. Tickets are available via Marina Bay Sands and SISTIC.
