Commercial airlines have been increasing their efforts to keep travellers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Safe Travel Barometer, a global comprehensive database that monitors traveller safety during COVID-19, has released a global ranking of the safest airlines in 2020.
More than 150 airlines have been evaluated according to their health and safety protocols for travellers. Each airline receives a Safe Travel Score based on their initiatives against COVID-19. In 2020, the safest airlines in the top ten rankings scored 4 or more out of 5 points.

German carrier Lufthansa topped the rankings with a score of 4.5 out of 5, becoming the world’s leading airline for its transparency in the communication of safety measures with their passengers. Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, both AirAsia and Philippine Airlines scored 4.2 out of 5.

Based on the Safe Travel Score criteria, these are the top 10 safest airlines worldwide:
- Lufthansa (Germany): 4.5
- Vistara (India): 4.4
- Delta Airlines (US): 4.4
- Allegiant Air (US): 4.4
- China Airlines (Taiwan): 4.2
- Hawaiian Airlines (US): 4.2
- AirAsia (Malaysia): 4.2
- Emirates (UAE): 4.2
- Philippines Airlines (Philippines): 4.2
- Alaska Airlines (US): 4.1
To determine the safest airlines for travellers in 2020, the Safety Travel Score is based on an independent audit of more than 150 airlines around the world. It evaluates the COVID-19-related safety and hygiene measures implemented by the airline and the crew, including the pre-boarding, boarding, and onboard experiences of passengers.
With many airlines erring on the side of caution to accommodate travellers in the future, it’s a reassuring sign of how the travel industry is preparing for the safe comeback of travel.
