Pokémon World Championships is Coming to Singapore for The First Time in 2027

The 2027 championships will be the first Pokémon World Championships held in Southeast Asia and only the second edition hosted in Asia, following Yokohama, Japan, in 2023. It will also mark the tournament's return to Asia after four years.

The news was revealed by Tsunekazu Ishihara, President and CEO of The Pokémon Company, during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco on 30 Aug 2026.

For Southeast Asian fans who may previously have had to travel much farther to experience Worlds, having the event in Singapore makes attending considerably more accessible.

What exactly is the Pokémon World Championships?

Think of it as the grand finale of the competitive Pokémon season. Top players from around the world spend the year competing at sanctioned tournaments and earning their way towards an invitation to Worlds. In Singapore, qualified players will then battle for the coveted title of Pokémon World Champion, along with prizes and other competitive rewards.

For the 2027 season, the World Championships will feature competition in:

• Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)

• Pokémon Video Game Championships (VGC)

• Pokémon GO

There is one notable change from previous editions. Pokémon UNITE will no longer be part of the Championship Series in 2027. Instead, a separate in-person Pokémon UNITE competition is planned for Japan, with further details to be announced.

Pokémon GO is getting a major format change too

Pokémon GO players can expect something different at Worlds 2027. The competition will switch to a three-versus-three team format, rather than focusing purely on individual competition. Teams will consist of at least three and up to four qualified competitors, with three players from each side taking part in a match.

The Pokémon Company says an official recruitment system will eventually allow qualified competitors to form teams, including with players from different rating zones. It should add a different dynamic to the tournament when Worlds arrives in Singapore.

Where will Pokémon Worlds Singapore 2027 take place?

Most of the action will happen at Singapore EXPO from 13 to 15 Aug 2027, before the biggest finals move to Singapore Indoor Stadium for Championship Sunday.

For overseas visitors, Singapore EXPO is particularly convenient. The venue sits in the Changi precinct, around a 10-minute drive from Changi Airport, and is directly served by Expo MRT station, which connects to both the East-West and Downtown lines.

That makes it relatively easy for fans flying into Singapore for the weekend to get from the airport to the main event venue. Those planning to attend Championship Sunday should take note that the finals will be held at a different venue, so your itinerary will need to account for the move from the Expo area to the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Can you attend if you're not competing?

You won't have to be a professional Pokémon player to be excited about Worlds. The official announcement specifically says that competitors will compete and fans will celebrate at Singapore EXPOover the weekend, suggesting that spectator experiences will form part of the event.

However, there is an important catch if you're already planning the trip. As of 9 Sep 2026, spectator ticket prices, registration procedures and sale dates have not been announced. The Pokémon Company has said that more information about the 2027 championships will be revealed at a later date. So don't book an event ticket from an unofficial seller just yet.

What could fans expect beyond the tournament?

Previous editions give us a glimpse of how big Pokémon Worlds can become, although Singapore's full programme has not been confirmed.

The 2026 event in San Francisco ran alongside PokémonXP, a broader fan convention featuring opportunities to play, shop, trade Pokémon cards, join activities, attend panels and workshops, and immerse yourself in the franchise beyond the tournament itself.

That doesn't mean all of those activities will automatically appear in Singapore. In particular, PokémonXP has not been announced for Singapore in 2027, so fans should wait for official confirmation before assuming that the same format will return. Likewise, details about Singapore-exclusive merchandise, Pokémon Center pop-ups, side tournaments and other fan activities remain unconfirmed for now.

Should Pokémon fans start planning a Singapore trip?

If Pokémon Worlds has been sitting on your travel bucket list, 13 to 15 Aug 2027 are definitely dates worth saving. Singapore's location also makes the event particularly accessible for fans travelling from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia. And because the main venue is close to Changi Airport, even a short Worlds-focused getaway should be relatively straightforward to plan.

That said, we wouldn't lock in an entire itinerary around the event just yet. The most important information for spectators, including tickets, admission rules, opening hours and the full programme, is still to come.

For now, Pokémon fans can officially start counting down.
