You can find a number of ancient pagodas and temples in Myanmar (Burma) but the one on Taung Kalat is pretty different from the rest. The Buddhist monastery of Taung Kalat lies magnificently on top of an extinct volcano plug, a volcanic landform shaped when magma hardens within a vent on an active volcano.

To reach the monastery, you must climb 777 steps to the summit. Expect to encounter some Macaque monkeys along the way waiting for any treats. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the region including the ancient city of Bagan and the majestic Mount Popa, the volcano responsible for the formation of Taung Kalat.
If you haven’t been to Myanmar, you must add Taung Kalat to the list of wondrous places you need to visit in this beautiful country.
Hike up this hilltop monastery when you visit Myanmar.
