Caño Cristales: The Spectacular Liquid Rainbow of Colombia

Caño Cristales, located in Serrania de la Macarena province of Meta in Colombia, is one of our recommended places to swim at before you die. Discover why!

Caño Cristales

The water is undeniably spectacular but is it safe to swim in there? The answer is a definite YES! Caño Cristales, located in Serrania de la Macarena province of Meta in Colombia, is one of our recommended places to swim at before you die. However, we suggest that you visit the place from the months of June to December in order to see the true beauty of the so called “Liquid Rainbow” or “The River of Five Colours”.

Some people attribute the striking colours to algae or moss but the real cause is a picky endemic aquatic plant called macarenia clavigera, which requires the right water level and sunlight to produce the eye-catching shades of red, blue, yellow, orange and green. This phenomenon only happens from June to December so be sure to take note of the months when you plan to visit the place.
