Lamma Island Guide: A Day Trip to This Hidden Gem in Hong Kong

Our Lamma Island Escape: A Day Trip Guide to This Hidden Gem in Hong Kong

From watching it on TVB to actually setting foot on the island.

Every visit to Hong Kong leaves me fascinated. From riding the iconic Ding Ding Tram on Hong Kong Island to enjoying nostalgic bites at old-school Cha Caan Tengs in Kowloon, the city always stirs up a sense of familiarity and charm. But this time, I ventured somewhere beyond the usual guides: Lamma Island (南丫岛).

Although it was only a day trip, we really enjoyed exploring Lamma Island! Here’s my Lamma Island day trip guide for nature lovers and travellers eager to explore a quieter side of Hong Kong!

How to get to Lamma Island

Reaching Lamma Island is simple and convenient. Ferries run daily between Central and the island, with departures about once every hour.

To get there, head to Central Pier No. 4 and board the ferry bound for Yung Shue Wan. No physical ticket is required; just ensure your Octopus card has sufficient balance, tap at the gate, and you’re good to go!

The fares are HKD$22.10 (~S$3.70) per adult on Monday to Saturday, and HKD$30.80 (~S$5.10) on Sundays and public holidays.

Note: Prices are subject to change. Please refer to the Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry Limited official website for the most up-to-date fares.

Ferry to Lamma Island

The ferry journey from Central to Lamma Island was surprisingly short! It takes just about 30 minutes. And before you know it, you’ll arrive at Yung Shue Wan Pier, greeted by a large welcoming signboard.

1. North Lamma Public Library

Just a short walk from the pier, you’ll find the North Lamma Public Library, but it’s more than it seems! The ground floor houses a heritage and cultural exhibition, where you can discover archaeological finds and learn about the island’s rich history and the daily life of its residents.

Upstairs, the public library offers a quiet reading space for both adults and children, with views overlooking the sea. It’s a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the island.

2. Lamma Post Office

Looking for something unique to do on Lamma Island besides cycling? Why not send a postcard from the Lamma Post Office! During our visit, we picked up a postcard from a nearby convenience store, jotted down some heartfelt notes, and mailed it to our loved ones. Don’t forget to add the adorable panda twin cubs stamp, a signature touch of Hong Kong, as the perfect keepsake from your trip!

We also got our hands on the limited edition stamps and stickers of the panda twin cubs, De De and Jia Jia. Super cute!

3. Hideout

When in Lamma Island, nothing feels better than sipping your favourite drink while overlooking the crystal blue sky and sea. We felt so lucky when we stumbled upon this cafe called Hideout, a cosy spot with an open-air terrace overlooking the ocean!

We ordered some sweet drinks and coffee, then just enjoyed the stunning vista while chilling. Prefer somewhere cooler? The café also offers comfortable indoor, air-conditioned seating.

4. O Tsai Beach

This one’s a real hidden gem. Just about a ten-minute walk from the pier is O Tsai Beach, a tranquil escape from the bustle of city life. The walk there is charming in itself — you’ll pass by old fishing boats, quiet village homes, and catch glimpses of the sea along the way. On the shore, we even spotted bits of sea glass and pretty shells glistening under the sun!

If you hike a little further beyond the beach, you’ll find a traditional Chinese-style pavilion waiting at the top, offering equally enchanting views of the coast and sea.

TripZilla tip: You can search for Jewels Beach or O Tsai on Google Maps, then follow accordingly.

5. Jaybird Restaurant

Craving something western? I highly recommend Jaybird Restaurant. Serving up everything from authentic fish and chips and flavourful tacos to boozy cocktails and indulgent French toast, it’s the perfect spot for a hearty lunch or dinner. I personally really enjoyed the fish, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. It’s been a while since I had fish and chips this delicious!

Lamma Island is an ideal day trip or weekend getaway for anyone needing a break from the crowds. Don’t leave Hong Kong without dedicating a day to this island!
