From 20 Nov to 25 Dec 2026, the waterfront around Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse transforms into a European-inspired Christmas market, complete with traditional wooden huts, festive food, seasonal shopping, illuminations and a towering real Christmas tree.

Set against Yokohama's Minatomirai skyline, it is an easy addition to a Tokyo itinerary and one of the city's biggest festive events of the year. But unlike some Christmas markets in Japan, the main area requires paid, date-specific admission, so a little planning will make your visit much smoother.

The Christmas Market in Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse 2026 runs from 20 Nov to 25 Dec 2026 at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Event Square and Aka-Renga Park.

Opening hours change throughout the event. On 20 Nov, the market opens from 5pm to 9pm, with last orders at 8.30pm. From 21 Nov to 4 Dec, it operates from 11am to 9pm, while from 5 to 25 Dec, opening hours are extended until 10pm. Last orders during this later period are at 9.30pm.

Individual areas and programmes may follow slightly different schedules. If you want more time to enjoy the market after dark, visiting from 5 Dec onwards gives you an additional hour in the evening.

What makes the Yokohama Christmas Market worth visiting?

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse has more than 110 years of history, while the market sits beside the sea overlooking the modern Minatomirai skyline. Traditional wooden hütte, brought in to recreate the atmosphere of German Christmas markets, line the event grounds with festive food, drinks and seasonal goods.

For 2026, the event is themed around “connection”, bringing together nature, culture, German Christmas traditions and the city of Yokohama.

It makes the experience feel less like visiting a temporary shopping fair and more like spending a winter evening in one of Yokohama's most atmospheric waterfront districts.

Don't miss the 11-metre Christmas tree

One of the centrepieces of this year's market is a real Sakhalin spruce, or aka-ezomatsu, standing around 11 metres tall. Around 20,000 colourful LED lights will illuminate the tree, with different lighting effects planned depending on the time of day.

While you can see the tree during the day, it is after sunset that the market really starts to shine, with the illuminated tree, wooden huts and Minatomirai skyline creating the classic Christmas-market atmosphere.

The market draws inspiration from traditional German Christmas markets, so visitors can expect German-style festive food and seasonal treats alongside Christmas merchandise and souvenirs. The original guide also highlights favourites such as sausages and glühwein, or German mulled wine.

Muslim travellers should note that traditional glühwein contains alcohol. For food and drinks in general, it is best to check directly with individual vendors if you have specific dietary requirements.

One popular souvenir to look out for is the event's limited-edition Christmas mug. The original mug receives a different design each year, while a premium version is also available through selected ticket and accommodation packages.

How much are Yokohama Christmas Market 2026 tickets?

General admission costs between ¥500 and ¥1,000, while priority admission costs ¥2,000 to ¥2,500. Travellers who want a premium mug can choose the priority admission ticket with a premium mug for ¥4,500 to ¥5,000.

Food, drinks and shopping inside the market are charged separately. Tickets are date-specific and limited in quantity, and prices differ depending on the date and ticket type. As of 29 Sep 2026, the exact date-by-date pricing and full ticket-sale details have not yet been released. The organisers say more information will be announced progressively from late October 2026.

Priority admission is expected to help shorten waiting time at the entrance and is scheduled to be sold online. If you are visiting on a weekend or close to Christmas, securing your preferred date in advance would be the safer option.

Can you buy tickets on the day?

Yes. General admission tickets can be purchased at the venue on the day, subject to availability. However, there is one important detail to remember: payment for same-day general admission tickets purchased at the venue is cash only.

Cashless payments are available at participating shops and stalls inside the market, but you will still need Japanese yen if you plan to buy your entrance ticket when you arrive. An ATM is available on the first floor of Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Building No. 2.

Who gets free admission?

Children of elementary-school age and younger can enter for free when accompanied by a guardian. There is also a special exemption earlier in the season: until 4 Dec 2026, children of junior-high-school age and younger receive free admission. From 5 Dec onwards, junior-high-school students will require a paid ticket.

On 25 Nov 2026, Yokohama will also hold its first Yokohama Residents' Thanks Day, giving Yokohama residents free admission to the event. This benefit applies specifically to local residents.

There will also be some free-access areas around the event site, meaning you can still experience part of the festive atmosphere without entering the main paid zone.

When is the best time to avoid the crowds?

If you prefer having enough space to actually browse the stalls, your best bet is a weekday shortly after the market opens. Crowds generally build towards the evening as people arrive after work and visitors come specifically for the illuminations. If seeing the lights is not your priority, exploring while it is still daylight can make for a much more relaxed visit.

Friday evenings and weekends are naturally busier, while the original Glos Travel guide flags the weekend immediately before Christmas and 23 to 25 Dec as particularly busy. For a good compromise between crowds and atmosphere, consider arriving on a weekday in the mid-to-late afternoon. You can browse before the evening rush and stay to see the lights after sunset.

Because admission is date-specific and visitor numbers may be controlled during busy periods, popular days can also become harder to enter.

For the full experience, we would choose after dark. The market overlooks Yokohama's waterfront and Minatomirai skyline, so once the Christmas tree, huts and surrounding lights come on, the entire area becomes far more atmospheric.

That said, you do not necessarily have to choose. Arrive an hour or two before sunset to enjoy the stalls while the area is easier to navigate, then stay as the illuminations come on. From 5 Dec onwards, the market remains open until 10pm, giving you plenty of time to linger after dark.

How to get to Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

The closest train stations are Bashamichi Station and Nihon-odori Station on the Minatomirai Line, both approximately a six-minute walk from Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse.

Minatomirai Station is about 12 minutes away on foot. Travellers using JR or the Yokohama Municipal Subway can walk from either Sakuragicho Station or Kannai Station in around 15 minutes. From Sakuragicho, the route via the scenic Kishamichi promenade is a nice way to approach the waterfront.

You can also reach the Red Brick Warehouse using the Akaikutsu sightseeing loop bus, BAYSIDE BLUE bus or Sea Bass water bus.

Can you visit Yokohama Christmas Market as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yokohama is close enough to Tokyo that you can spend the day exploring the waterfront before returning to the capital in the evening.

But if you want to take your time with the illuminations, staying around Minatomirai is worth considering. It puts the Christmas market and many of Yokohama's major attractions within walking distance and saves you from having to rush back to Tokyo at the end of the night.

The organisers are also working with nearby luxury hotels on special accommodation packages that include perks such as priority market admission and premium mugs.

What else can you do nearby?

Make the Christmas market part of a wider day out rather than travelling to Yokohama just for the evening. The surrounding Minatomirai district is one of the city's main sightseeing areas. Nearby attractions include the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA, where visitors can learn about the history of instant noodles and create their own customised cup, and Yokohama Cosmo World, instantly recognisable by its giant Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel.

You can also simply wander along the waterfront before making your way towards the Red Brick Warehouse in the afternoon. A simple itinerary would be to spend the morning and early afternoon sightseeing around Minatomirai, grab a late lunch or coffee, then enter the Christmas market before sunset.

What if it rains?

A little rain does not automatically mean the market is cancelled. The event is scheduled to operate rain or shine, although it may close if severe weather makes conditions unsafe. If bad weather is forecast, check the official Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse website or its official social media channels before heading over.

As much of the experience takes place outdoors, waterproof shoes, an umbrella and warm clothing will make a rainy visit significantly more comfortable.

Dress warmly, especially after sunset

Yokohama's waterfront can get chilly on December evenings, particularly when you are spending several hours outside. Layers, a proper winter coat and a scarf or gloves are worth bringing, especially if you plan to stay until closing.

After all, Christmas lights are considerably more enjoyable when you are not counting down the minutes until you can get back indoors.

If your Japan trip falls between late November and Christmas, the Yokohama Christmas Market is an easy festive addition to your itinerary. What makes it stand out is the combination of historic red-brick architecture, Minatomirai's waterfront skyline, German-inspired Christmas traditions and elaborate illuminations.

Just don't treat it as a completely spontaneous stop during peak periods. Tickets are date-specific, and weekends and the days closest to Christmas can get busy.

For the best balance, aim for a weekday, arrive before sunset and stay until the lights come on. You will get to experience both sides of the market without spending your entire evening fighting through the biggest crowds.
