Before you start dreaming about snow-covered streets, cosy winter cafés and picture-perfect winter landscapes, there's one important thing to sort out: your winter wardrobe!

Unlike travellers from countries with four seasons, most Singaporeans don't usually have thick winter coats, thermal wear and snow boots sitting in their wardrobes. And if it's your first time travelling somewhere with sub-zero temperatures, figuring out what to pack can be a little overwhelming.

And here's something even more exciting! Decathlon Singapore is bringing back its free -18°C Winter[proof] Capsules, allowing travellers to experience freezing temperatures and test their winter gear before boarding their flights. Whether you're preparing for your first winter holiday or updating your cold-weather wardrobe, here's where to shop and how to get ready for your trip in 2026.

Ever wondered how cold -18°C actually feels? Well, now's your chance to find out without booking a flight! As part of its WINTER[PROOF] 2026 campaign, Decathlon Singapore is bringing back its immersive cold-room experience, where shoppers can step into freezing temperatures inspired by winter destinations such as Chamonix in France and Harbin in China.

But this isn't just about experiencing the cold for fun. The capsules allow travellers to test winter clothing in simulated sub-zero conditions before heading overseas. After all, there's a big difference between trying on a puffer jacket inside an air-conditioned shopping mall and finding out whether it can keep you warm in freezing weather!

Interestingly, the experience comes shortly after Snow City Singapore permanently closed its doors on 30 September 2026, following 26 years of operation. Decathlon's returning capsules now offer another opportunity to experience sub-zero temperatures locally.

And the best part? The experience is completely free!

Where can you try the free -18°C winter experience in Singapore?

First time travelling in winter? Here's how to layer your clothes properly

One of the biggest mistakes first-time winter travellers can make is assuming that a single thick jacket is enough to keep them warm. In reality, dressing for winter is about choosing the right combination of layers rather than simply packing the bulkiest coat you can find.

As part of its WINTER[PROOF] campaign, Decathlon is highlighting a three-layer dressing system to help travellers prepare for different winter conditions.

Here's how it works:

1. Base layer: Keeps you dry

This is the layer closest to your skin, usually consisting of thermal tops and leggings. Its main purpose is to help manage moisture and keep your skin dry, especially when you're moving between heated indoor spaces and cold outdoor environments. Uniqlo's HEATTECH collection is one example of thermal innerwear worth considering for this layer.

2. Middle layer: Keeps you warm

Think fleece jackets, knitted sweaters or other insulating clothing that helps trap body heat. Having a separate middle layer also makes it easier to adjust your outfit as temperatures change throughout the day.

3. Outer layer: Protects you from the weather

Your outermost layer protects you against cold winds, rain and snow. Depending on your destination, this could be an insulated winter coat, down jacket or waterproof and windproof shell. If you're planning to ski, snowboard or spend long hours in snowy conditions, it's especially important to choose outerwear suitable for those activities. And don't forget: gloves, scarves, beanies and warm socks can make a big difference too!

Your winter holiday packing checklist

Before you start packing for your December getaway, here's a simple checklist to help you get started.

  • Thermal tops and leggings: For your base layer.

  • Fleece jackets or knitted sweaters: For extra insulation.

  • Winter jacket or coat: Choose one suitable for your destination's weather.

  • Waterproof winter boots: Especially for snowy or slushy conditions.

  • Warm socks: Look for comfortable, moisture-managing materials.

  • Gloves, scarves and beanies: To protect against the cold.

  • Lip balm and moisturiser: Helpful for dry winter air.

  • Waterproof and windproof clothing: Particularly important for snow activities.

One last tip: Try on your winter clothing together before packing. Make sure your jacket fits comfortably over your other layers and that your footwear has enough room for suitable socks.
