In other words, travel may still be visa-free, but it’s no longer entirely hassle-free.

The Rise of “Pre-Travel Paperwork”

Governments worldwide are tightening border controls while keeping tourism accessible. The result? A growing number of countries now require travellers to register online before arrival, even if no visa is needed.

These systems are typically:

• Quick and digital

• Low-cost or free

• Approved within minutes to a few days

But they can still catch travellers off guard, especially those used to spontaneous trips. Missing one can mean denied boarding at the airport.

1. United Kingdom

   Requirement: ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) (rolling out / required for many travellers)

2. United States

   Requirement: ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation)

3. Canada

4. Australia
