You've almost certainly encountered the 'glow-up montage' in pop culture. From American movies such as The Princess Diaries series to K-dramas like 200 pound beauty, stories of overnight transformations have left viewers in awe. Somewhere along the way, somebody came up with the idea of applying it to Singaporean context: the JB day trip.

Finishing a gel manicure, lash extensions, and a facial all in one day trip to Johor Bahru (JB) sounds almost too good to be true. Good news: it is entirely doable, and it will cost you far less than in Singapore. Read on to find out how Singaporeans make the routine work, and get some ideas for your own.

How to structure your JB day trip

Sequence is absolutely crucial here. Here is the order that most beauty professionals recommend, and some popular well-reviewed salons that'll make each stop worthwhile.

Start with a facial appointment

Book your facial first, ideally by 9.30am. Most therapists advise against getting your face wet or wearing makeup for a few hours afterwards, so doing it first means recovery time works in your favour. Yees Facial & Treatment Centre in Taman Johor Jaya is a well-regarded choice, with over 20 years in business and therapists who tailor each session to your skin type. It opens at 9am from Wednesday to Monday.

If you're short on time, Kskin Korean Express Facial is your answer. Their cleanse-and-brighten express sessions start from just RM12, and they have five branches across JB with treatments lasting as short as 15 minutes. It doesn't get shorter than that.

Followed by lashes

Once you've got the facial settled, move on to the lash appointment. Since you will need to keep your eyes closed for most of the session, it is best done after your facial. La Mior Nail Spa at Komtar JBCC opens from 10am and stays open until 10pm daily, giving you maximum scheduling flexibility. For a more boutique feel, The Browlips in Taman Pelangi is another popular stop often featured on Lemon8. Located just five minutes from CIQ, it's known for clean, natural-looking results.

Finish the day with nails

End your JB day trip with the most low-maintenance treatment: your nails. It requires no recovery time, and you can leave the salon and head straight to the Causeway. Fairy Nails at Holiday Plaza has gone viral on TikTok and Lemon8 for its intricate designs, and its proximity to CIQ makes it a convenient last stop before heading home. If you're not heading home just yet, Sasa Nails House at Mount Austin opens daily until 8pm (last appointment at 7pm) and also offers keratin treatments in addition to lash extensions.

Why beauty is worth crossing the Causeway for

Beauty in JB runs at roughly 30-40% of Singapore prices. A gel manicure that sets you back at least S$38 at home can cost as little as RM40 (~S$12) across the border. Eyelash extensions and facials follow the same pattern. When you think about the time taken to cross the Causeway, dedicating one day trip for beauty makes perfect practical sense. Many Singaporeans already make the trip monthly; the only upgrade here is cramming three treatments into one visit.

How long does each treatment actually take?

Here's the time allocation breakdown for ease of planning. A gel manicure typically runs 45 minutes to an hour. Eyelash extensions take anywhere from 45-90 minutes, depending on the style and fullness you choose. A basic facial ranges from 15 minutes for an express cleanse-and-brighten session, to 60-90 minutes for a full treatment. In total, you are looking at three to four hours of chair time, excluding travel and short waits between appointments.

Tips for a smooth run

  • Book ahead. Especially on weekends, popular salons fill up fast. WhatsApp each salon a day or two in advance.

  • Group salons by location. Arrange appointments at salons no more than 15 minutes from each other to minimise travel time and potential delays.

  • Do away with heavy makeup. You will be lying down for both the facial and lashes, so save time by skipping mascara and eyeshadow on the day itself.

  • Cross early. Aim to clear the Causeway before 9am to beat the morning rush.

  • Bring MYR. Not every salon in JB accepts Singapore-issued cards; cash remains the safer option.

Our final thoughts

A JB day trip centred on beauty is absolutely possible with a solid plan. Get the sequence right (facial, then lashes, then nails), book all three in advance, and cross the Causeway early. Done well, you'll be back in Singapore by evening with glowing skin, fluttery lashes, and perfectly painted nails.
