Bugis and Bencoolen are great if cafés, culture and heritage neighbourhoods are higher on your list, while City Hall makes a very convenient first-timer base for central Singapore and Marina Bay. Most importantly, check the actual walking route from the MRT exit to your hotel, not just the straight-line distance.
