Air New Zealand’s World-First Economy Sleep Pods Are Coming & You Can Book Them Next Month!
Long-haul flights in economy may never feel the same again.
Air New Zealand is set to launch its highly anticipated Economy Skynest™, the world’s first lie-flat sleep pods designed specifically for Economy and Premium Economy passengers.
For travellers used to dozing upright on ultra-long-haul routes, this could be a game-changer. Previously announced in 2023, the sleep pods will finally be available for bookings!

The Skynest concept introduces six individual lie-flat pods located between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins on the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
Each pod measures around 203cm in length, giving passengers enough space to fully stretch out—something traditionally reserved for Business Class cabins. Everything you need, like a personal stowage, USB port, lighting for reading, seatbelts, and a privacy curtain, is there.
Designed as a quiet, private space, the Skynest allows travellers to step away from their seats and recharge mid-flight, offering a rare opportunity to actually sleep properly in economy.

Unlike a standard seat upgrade, Skynest is offered as an add-on experience.
Passengers can book a four-hour session during their flight, scheduled outside of meal services. Each traveller is allowed one session per flight, ensuring fair access across the cabin.
This means you’ll still have your regular seat, but with the added option of a dedicated rest period in a fully flat sleeping pod.
Routes and Booking Details
Skynest will debut on select ultra-long-haul flights, starting with routes between:
New York City
Auckland
These are among the longest flights in the world, making them the perfect testing ground for a product focused on comfort and rest.
Bookings open: 18 May 2026
First travel period: From November 2026
Who is eligible?

Passengers should also be comfortable climbing into the pods, as access may involve stepping or climbing—especially for the upper-level bunks.

For years, airlines have focused premium innovations on Business and First Class. Skynest signals a shift. It's bringing meaningful comfort upgrades to the back of the plane.
For Singaporeans and Southeast Asian travellers used to long-haul flights to Europe or the US, the idea of actually lying flat in economy—even for a few hours—feels almost too good to be true.
If successful, Skynest could redefine expectations for economy travel worldwide. And the next time you board a 10+ hour flight, you might not have to choose between comfort and cost!
