5 Thrilling Outdoor Activities to do in Laos

A popular destination among travellers, Laos' less-known and less-visited countryside is ideal for outdoor activities, adventure and sports. Here are 5 thrilling outdoor activities that you can do in Laos.

Laos has become a popular, crowd-pulling location among the travellers for its beautiful attractions and lovely towns. Yet most of the country retains its less-visited countryside, which makes these places an excellent location for outdoor activities. Here are 5 outdoor activities you shouldn’t miss when you’re in Laos.

1. Kayak tour through Si Phan Don

Most people visit Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) for a breather from the urban tension and to enjoy being pampered by the sun. The easy-going archipelago is more than just a place for relaxation, it houses one of the best spots to kayak. Meander along the gentle Mekong river and take in the amazing scenery. If you’re lucky, you might even meet the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin!

2. Zipping through the forest

Fancy a little daredevil adventure? Head to northern Laos where you can undertake The Gibbon Experience and fly at amazing speed through thick forests and valleys on a zip-line 500m above the ground. If that isn’t enough, experience a sleepover at the tree houses that are accessible only by zip-line.

3. Rock climbing in Nong Kiau

There are a few ideal climbing spots in Laos. Most of them are centred around the Backpackers’ hub, Vang Vieng. In a small settlement near to the Ou River of Northern Laos, Nong Kiau, you can own the rock and scale the surrounding limestone mountains amidst the most beautiful landscapes you could ever imagine.

 4. Boat trip into limestone cave

Tham Kong Lo cave is one of the most scenic places in Laos that stretches 7km long and goes 91m high. Catch a small boat and navigate your way through the wide river passage before stopping off to explore on foot.

5. Trekking the “100 waterfalls” & remote Katang villages

Being a newly discovered attraction, the “100 Waterfalls” hike remains relatively unknown among many travellers. The village of Nong Khiaw makes a perfect trekking experience with the great number of falls and is sure to leave a deep impression.

A memorable trekking experience is one that brings you somewhere unexpected. After your walkthrough to the sacred forest, pay a visit to Katang villages of Dong Phy Vieng and experience life outside the capital city. The villagers are strong believers of spirits and you will be taught to evade any off-limits behaviour.
