When talking about a holiday to South Korea, Seoul is often the first place that comes to mind. But for Singapore travellers craving a little more room to breathe, Jeju is quickly becoming more than a scenic add-on to a city break.

South Korea’s largest island has long been loved for its volcanic peaks, forest trails, windswept coastlines and fresh seafood. Now, a rise in independent travel and longer stays is changing the way visitors experience it. Rather than rushing through a checklist of attractions, travellers are giving themselves time to settle in, explore at their own pace and enjoy the hotel as part of the holiday.

Jeju’s appeal is not simply anecdotal. Recent visitor figures show that the island welcomed 28,559 travellers from Singapore between January and May 2026, up 104.3% from 13,982 during the same period the previous year.

International arrivals as a whole also climbed. Jeju recorded 955,748 international visitors in the first five months of 2026, a 21.5% increase from 786,881 a year earlier. In May alone, 241,555 international visitors arrived on the island, including 7,264 from Singapore.

The way people are travelling around Jeju is changing too. According to the 2025 Jeju Visitor Survey, 91.9% of international visitors travelled independently, while the average length of stay rose to 4.79 days.

Those numbers suggest a shift in mindset. Jeju is increasingly being treated as a destination in its own right, not merely a quick detour from Seoul. For Singapore travellers, that makes sense. The island offers a slower, more nature-led contrast to Korea’s fast-moving capital, while still delivering the food, culture and polished hospitality that make South Korea such an easy repeat destination.

A Jeju holiday where the resort is part of the experience

There are holidays when a hotel is simply somewhere to sleep. Then there are stays where the property shapes the entire rhythm of the trip.

The Shilla Jeju falls firmly into the second category. Located in the Jungmun resort area, it is designed as a year-round island retreat, bringing accommodation, leisure, dining and nature into one place. Guests can start the day with a swim, linger over a meal, join a seasonal activity or retreat to the spa without having to plan every hour around another drive across the island.

That flexibility is particularly useful in Jeju, where many visitors travel independently and build their own itineraries. You can head out to explore the island’s forests, walking trails and dramatic coastline, then return to a resort that feels like a destination rather than a pit stop.

The property also works across different types of trips. Couples can lean into the quieter side of the resort, families have dedicated facilities and programmes to keep younger travellers engaged, and nature lovers can join activities that offer a more guided introduction to Jeju’s landscapes.

For couples: pool time, wellness and unhurried evenings

If your ideal island holiday involves a generous amount of downtime, The Shilla Jeju makes it easy to slow the pace. The resort’s adults-only pool, reserved for guests aged 19 and above, offers couples and adult travellers a more peaceful place to swim and unwind. Together with the spa, wellness facilities and dining options, it creates the kind of setting where an afternoon by the water can comfortably turn into dinner and drinks without the need to leave the property.

It is a different proposition from a packed urban itinerary. Instead of spending each day navigating stations and shopping districts, travellers can make space for long breakfasts, leisurely swims and quiet evenings framed by Jeju’s coastal scenery.

For families: spaces designed for younger travellers

Family holidays tend to run more smoothly when children have places and programmes of their own. At The Shilla Jeju, families can make use of the Family Pool as well as dedicated facilities such as Kids’ Cabin and Kids’ Island.

Children’s activities add another layer to the stay, giving younger guests something more engaging than simply following an adults’ sightseeing schedule. For parents, this means a resort day does not have to feel like a compromise. It can be one of the highlights of the holiday.

These facilities also make the property suitable for multigenerational trips. With pools, dining and leisure options gathered in one location, family members can spend time together without everyone having to follow exactly the same schedule.

For nature lovers: seasonal ways to experience the island

Jeju’s natural beauty is one of its biggest draws, and the resort’s seasonal G.A.O. programmes help guests engage with it in different ways. Depending on the season and schedule, activities may include trekking, family-oriented experiences and professional photography sessions.

The appeal is simple: you can experience more of the island without having to research and organise every detail yourself. A guided trek can add context to the landscape, while a photography session offers families and couples a polished keepsake from the trip.

Nature is woven into the resort itself, too. Soombi Garden features plants native to Jeju and takes its name from sumbisori, the distinctive breathing sound made by the island’s traditional women divers, known as haenyeo, when they return to the surface.

It is a thoughtful connection to an important part of Jeju’s cultural identity. Nearby, the Poolside Bar looks out over both the outdoor pool and Soombi Garden, making it an inviting spot to pause between activities and take in the surroundings.

Dining can be part of the itinerary too

A relaxing resort stay needs good food within easy reach, especially on days when no one is eager to venture out again after sunset.

The Shilla Jeju has several on-property dining options, including The Parkview, its all-day dining restaurant, and Hinode, which serves Japanese cuisine. Together with the resort’s other venues, they give guests enough variety to make dining part of the stay rather than a logistical afterthought.

That does not mean skipping Jeju’s local food scene, of course. The island is known for ingredients and dishes worth seeking out beyond the hotel. But having several dependable choices on site gives travellers the freedom to alternate between exploring and staying in, particularly on a longer trip.

Three Shilla stays for three different Jeju itineraries

Not every visit to Jeju calls for a full resort experience. Travellers planning a more urban or beach-focused itinerary can also consider two other properties in the Shilla portfolio.

Shilla Stay Jeju is located in downtown Jeju City, making it a practical base for travellers who prefer city convenience and easy access to urban attractions. It suits shorter stays, business-leisure trips or itineraries that place more emphasis on exploring the northern side of the island.

Shilla Stay Plus Ihotewoo, meanwhile, is near Jeju International Airport and Iho Tewoo Beach. With ocean-view rooms and an outdoor pool, it offers a coastal escape that is well positioned for travellers who want to stay close to the airport without giving up the holiday atmosphere.

Taken together, the three properties cover distinct styles of travel: an immersive luxury resort stay at The Shilla Jeju, an urban base at Shilla Stay Jeju and a convenient seaside break at Shilla Stay Plus Ihotewoo.

Why Jeju deserves more than a quick stop

Jeju is at its best when you resist the temptation to race around it. Its appeal lies in the changes of pace: a morning trail followed by a lazy poolside afternoon, a drive along the coast before dinner, or a full resort day with nowhere else you need to be.

With more international travellers choosing independent itineraries and spending longer on the island, Jeju’s evolution feels natural. It gives Singapore travellers a familiar way into South Korea, but with more nature, more breathing room and a different kind of energy from Seoul.

Whether you are planning a couples’ retreat, a multigenerational holiday or a few restorative days by the coast, the island now has accommodation to match. And at a resort such as The Shilla Jeju, checking in need not mean stepping away from the destination. It can be one of the most enjoyable ways to experience it.
