7 Weirdest Hotels to Sleep in Around the World

How did someone come up with sleeping in an intestine?

If you’re the sort of traveller who prefers the bizarre over the bland, you’ll enjoy this list of strange, weird hotels.

Stay a night in a human intestine (yes, this exists somehow), a Cold War prison, or even inside a giant beagle; around the world, some hoteliers have thrown out the rule book to offer overnight experiences that are just odd. Here are 7 of the weirdest places you can stay in, if you dare!

In an intestine (CasAnus, Belgium)

Let’s start with a squelch (sorry). Tucked away in a sculpture park in Flanders sits CasAnus, a hotel shaped like a giant human intestine.

Created by Dutch artist Joep Van Lieshout, this anatomical oddity offers a surprisingly cosy interior, complete with a double bed, heating, and a working bathroom. It’s part artwork, part overnight stay, and definitely unforgettable. In a good or bad way, I haven’t decided.

In a plane caught in the trees (Boeing 727 Hotel, Costa Rica)

Perched in the jungle canopy near Manuel Antonio National Park, this retired 1960s Boeing 727 has been given a second life as a hotel suite.

Suspended on a concrete plinth 15 metres off the ground, the aircraft offers two bedrooms, a wood-panelled interior, and balconies with views over the rainforest. It’s aviation nostalgia meets eco-lodge chic. Unfortunately, in-flight snacks are not included.

In a crane (Crane Hotel Faralda, Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Ever wanted to sleep in a crane? Probably not. But once you see the Faralda Crane Hotel towering over Amsterdam’s NDSM Wharf, you might change your mind.

This 50-metre-high former industrial crane has been converted into a luxury stay, with three eccentric suites stacked vertically in the arm. If you’re up there, you probably don’t have a fear of heights, so feel free to also enjoy their ultimate rooftop hot tub with panoramic views over the city.

In a prison (Karosta Prison, Latvia)

A night here is less “room service and mints on pillows” and more “lock-up and lights out or else”. Karosta Prison was once a Soviet military detention centre, and now offers brave guests the full inmate experience, complete with iron bunks, surly guards, and authentic prison rations. It’s immersive tourism at its grimmest, but certainly one for those who travel for the plot.

In a crazy house (Hang Nga Guesthouse, Vietnam)

Willy Wonka meets Gaudí in this architectural fever dream in Vietnam’s central highlands. Officially called Hang Nga Guesthouse, but universally known as the Crazy House, it features warped staircases, dripping spiderweb motifs, and tree-trunk-like walls.

Each room is themed, like the “Termite Room” or “Kangaroo Room”, and nothing is quite like what you would expect it to be. It’s weird, wonderful, and totally bizarre.

In a sewer pipe (Dasparkhotel, Germany)

Sewer pipes are normally something to avoid…unless you’re in Bottrop, where you can actually sleep in one! Dasparkhotel offers stays inside repurposed concrete drain pipes fitted out with a bed, lighting, and just enough room to sit upright.

Bathrooms and meals are communal, and you pay what you think the stay is worth. It’s minimalist, eco-conscious, and oddly charming.

In a doghouse (Dog Bark Park Inn, USA)

I’ll admit that was a little clickbaity, but this is literally a dog house. Shaped like a giant beagle (named Sweet Willy by locals), this B&B invites guests to sleep in the dog’s belly, with an adorable reading nook in the muzzle.

Run by a pair of wood-carving artists, it’s as wholesome as it is eccentric. Of course, it’s pet-friendly!

Good night, strange dreams!

Whether it’s being tucked into a concrete pipe, a Cold War prison, or the innards of a giant intestine, these weird stays are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.
