Whether you prefer a classic road marathon, a technical trail run or a triathlon combining swimming, cycling and running, there is no shortage of challenges worth planning a trip around. Here are eight races in Taiwan that deserve a place on your run-cation calendar.
1. New Taipei City Wan Jin Shi Marathon
The New Taipei City Wan Jin Shi Marathon takes runners along the dramatic northern coast of Taiwan. Beginning in Wanli, the course follows stretches of Provincial Highway 2 through coastal communities such as Jinshan and Shimen, with views of fishing ports, rugged headlands and the sea along the way.
It is also one of Taiwan’s most prominent international road races, attracting both elite competitors and recreational runners. Those who are not ready for the full marathon can opt for the shorter challenge run.
Month: March
Distance: 42.195km and 10km
2. Challenge Taiwan
Hosted in Taitung, Challenge Taiwan turns one of eastern Taiwan’s most beautiful destinations into a sprawling triathlon course. Participants begin with a swim in Flowing Lake before cycling between the mountains and Pacific coastline. The running route then passes through Taitung’s city centre, fields and seaside paths.
With categories ranging from sprint and Olympic distances to full-distance triathlons, the event welcomes both newcomers and experienced endurance athletes. Its energetic atmosphere and scenic surroundings have also helped it grow into one of Asia’s largest triathlon gatherings.
Month: April
Distance: Up to 226km, with 113km, 51.5km and shorter categories available
3. Formosa Trail
Trail runners looking for a serious challenge can head into the mountains of central Taiwan for Formosa Trail. Organised by Beast Runners, the event follows forest paths and old trails once used by Indigenous hunters, offering a rugged journey through a quieter side of the island.
Expect steep climbs, technical terrain and long stretches surrounded by dense vegetation. Several categories are available, allowing runners to choose anything from a shorter introduction to trail racing to an ultramarathon exceeding 100 kilometres.
Month: November
Distance: Multiple categories from 10km to 104km
4. IRONMAN Taiwan 70.3 Kenting

For tropical scenery, head to Taiwan’s southernmost region for IRONMAN 70.3 Kenting. The race begins with an ocean swim before athletes cycle along the coast and complete their run near Kenting’s resort district.
Kenting is surrounded by the Taiwan Strait, Bashi Channel and Pacific Ocean, making the course particularly scenic. However, competitors should not underestimate its famous seasonal winds, which can add another layer of difficulty to the cycling leg.
Once the race is over, unwind by the beach, visit Kenting Night Market or continue exploring the natural attractions of Kenting National Park.
Month: November
Distance: 113km, comprising a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run
5. Sun Moon Lake Marathon

Sun Moon Lake is already one of Taiwan’s best-known natural attractions, but circling it on foot offers a completely different way to appreciate the landscape. The race follows an undulating route surrounded by forested hills, temples and glimpses of the lake.
Do not let the peaceful scenery fool you. The changing elevation makes this a demanding event, particularly for those tackling the full marathon. A 29km category is also available for runners who want a substantial challenge without completing the entire 42.195km course.
Month: November
Distance: 42.195km and 29km
6. Penghu Cross-sea Marathon

Turn your race into an island-hopping adventure at the Penghu Cross-Sea Marathon. Unlike races that loop back towards their starting point, this event follows a point-to-point route through several parts of the Penghu archipelago.
The course begins on Xiyu before crossing the Penghu Great Bridge and continuing through Baisha, Zhongtun and the main island. Along the way, runners encounter fishing villages, coastal scenery and Penghu’s distinctive geological landscapes.
The islands’ powerful winds can make the exposed sections especially challenging, but they are also part of what makes this race so memorable.
Month: November
Distance: 42km, 21km, 11km and 5km
7. Taiwan National Parks Marathon – Yangmingshan
Located just outside central Taipei, Yangmingshan National Park is known for its volcanic terrain, mountain roads, forests and seasonal fields of silver grass. The Taiwan National Parks Marathon allows runners to experience these landscapes through a demanding highland course.
The race starts near Yangmingshan’s Chungshan Hall and includes full-marathon, half-marathon and recreational categories. Its convenient proximity to Taipei also makes it easy to combine the event with a longer city break.
Prepare for changing elevations and unpredictable mountain weather, even if conditions in central Taipei appear calm.
Month: November
Distance: 42.195km, 21.0975km and 5km
8. Taipei Marathon

End the year with one of Taiwan’s biggest urban running events. Beginning outside Taipei City Hall, the Taipei Marathon takes participants through the capital’s major roads, commercial districts and riverside areas.
The full marathon concludes at Taipei Municipal Stadium, while half-marathon runners finish along Nanjing East Road. Thousands of local and international athletes participate each year, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the city.
Once you cross the finish line, Taipei’s night markets, hot springs, shopping districts and food scene provide plenty of ways to celebrate.
Month: December
Distance: 42.195km and 21.0975km
Whether you are racing through central Taipei, battling the coastal winds of Penghu or following remote trails through Taiwan’s mountains, each event reveals a side of the island that ordinary sightseeing may miss.
Choose your challenge, start training and turn your next visit to Taiwan into a run-cation to remember.
