Regional Tsunami Warnings Issued After 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes the Philippines
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center rapidly issued alerts across the Asia-Pacific region.
A powerful 7.8-magnitude offshore earthquake rocked the southern Philippines early Monday morning, triggering region-wide tsunami warnings, forcing immediate coastal evacuations, and causing severe structural collapse in heavily populated urban areas.
The tremor, which struck at approximately 7:37 am local time off the coast of Mindanao, stands as the most powerful earthquake to hit the archipelago this year. The death toll has reached at least 15, with more than 100 others injured, though disaster management officials warn that casualties may continue to rise as search-and-rescue teams clear the debris.

Initial damage assessments indicate severe structural devastation closest to the epicentre. In General Santos City, a major commercial hub in Mindanao, a shopping complex housing a prominent Jollibee fast-food branch completely collapsed into rubble.
Wire agencies have confirmed that emergency first responders and local police are actively on-site conducting search-and-rescue operations amidst the debris. School classes and government operations across the region have been suspended indefinitely while engineers evaluate building safety.
International Tsunami Advisories Triggered
Due to the immense strength and shallow depth of the offshore quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre rapidly issued alerts across the Asia-Pacific region. Tsunami warnings and sea-level monitoring advisories were activated for coastal zones in:
The Philippines (Specifically across nine coastal provinces in Mindanao)
Indonesia
Taiwan
Palau
Papua New Guinea

The impact of the powerful quake has reverberated across borders, prompting the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to issue an early tsunami warning for Sabah’s east coast.
Tremors from the earthquake were actively felt in several areas of Sabah, including Tawau and Semporna. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup announced that tsunami waves of up to 0.4 metres are expected to reach the coastal areas of Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, and Lahad Datu.
In response, authorities have activated tsunami advisory sirens across the four affected districts as an early warning and preparedness measure.
Residents on Sabah’s east coast are being strongly advised to avoid coastal areas and strictly comply with safety instructions. Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup also urged the public to remain calm, avoid panic, and refrain from spreading unverified information whilst the government and relevant security agencies closely monitor the evolving situation.
Urgent Advice for Travellers
The region remains highly volatile. The main earthquake has already been followed by multiple strong aftershocks ranging between magnitudes of 6.1 and 6.5, which pose an ongoing threat to already weakened structures.
If you are a traveller currently located in Mindanao, Sabah's east coast, or impacted Pacific coastal zones:
Move Inland Immediately: If you are near the coast in an alert zone, do not wait for visible signs of a tsunami. Move to high ground immediately.
Monitor Local Authority Feeds: Keep tabs on updates from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in the Philippines, or official MetMalaysia channels (including the myCuaca mobile application, their official website, or their hotline at 1300-22-1638).
Expect Infrastructure Delays: Expect widespread power outages, disrupted telecommunications, and potential closures of regional airports and maritime ports.
