Visiting the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is often a highlight for travellers to Sri Lanka. Situated in the village of Pinnawala, northwest of Kegalle, this 25-acre sanctuary provides a home for orphaned, abandoned, and disabled elephants. Established in 1975, the orphanage has long been dedicated to the care and conservation of these majestic animals.

Known for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has become a significant tourist draw of Sri Lanka. While subjecting wild animals to tourism is condemned by wildlife advocates, the income generated from tourists helps in maintaining the orphanage.
